I was facing what felt like an insurmountable task: a house full of clutter and an upcoming move. What do I do when something feels insurmountable? I do nothing.

After a long time of doing nothing and feeling very bad about it, I did something, I called Marielle. I am happy to report I lost 2,000 pounds!

Actually, I don’t know the exact number of pounds of clutter I gave away and threw away, but it’s up there. Throughout this process I learned an important lesson: while the house needed to be organized, it was I who truly benefited from Marielle’s organizing.

I don’t want to tell you all about my clutter habits, so I’ll just give you a peek: sometimes I would go weeks without my laundry baskets because they were stuffed with clutter and squirreled away in closets. I also had boxes of unsorted items from the homes of my grandparents and parents. You see, if your family is really good at collecting clutter, you don’t have to deal with it at all—just pass it on to your kids!

It might not surprise you that it’s difficult to even begin addressing an out-of-control stuff problem. A lot of things can come first: dishes, errands, Wheel of Fortune, anything! normal" Marielle helped me to break the big job into bite-sized pieces. She has been both my general and my foot soldier. Together, we fought the battles.

Everyone has stuff. The trick is to know which stuff to keep and which to send on its way. For me, it was a very emotional process because I went through not only my own possessions, but that of other generations. Don’t let me scare you off—your job may be much smaller. But going through the process is so worth it; it frees up space not only in your house, but in your mind.

Now the children’s school treasures, our family photos and heirlooms, and my own childhood keepsakes are safely stored. Our clutter-free house sold right away. I don’t live with that nagging feeling of “I should get organized”. And my laundry baskets are used for laundry!

I highly recommend Marielle as your guide though clutter, whether it is 2,000 pounds or just a little off the top.
